[News Boquete] U.S. Dept. of Social Security Difficulties

A number of expats here in Boquete have written Washington as a result of the following message posted on News Boquete:

 The Washington Post reported last week that there is a high degree of dissatisfaction with Social Security offices and that a select committee has been established in the Senate to look into the matter. The article is here:

The Chair of the select committee is Senator Susan M. Collins (R-Maine), and the Vice Chair is Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. (D-Pennsylvania).

We have written both Senators about the problems Panamanian expats are having since social security functions, previously handled admirably by the U.S. Embassy in Panama, were transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica in October 2017. 

We encourage all of you who have experienced problems in this regard to write Senators Collins and Casey, too. The appointment of this special committee may be our best chance for eliciting change. There are online forms on the following online pages:

[News Boquete] ACCBoquete delivers new stove

On May 10, 2018 ACCBoquete held a Mothers Day fund raiser for a new stove for the Boquete Police Department.  Last week a new stove was delivered by Joe Hart, President and Franc Lugo, ACCBoquete member,  to Lieutenant John Carolla and other staff members at the Boquete PD.  

ACCBoquete would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone who came to the fund raiser and also to those that could not be there but gave donations to make this happen.

[News Boquete] Memorial Service for Joe Wilcox

On Tuesday, May 30th at 2 PM we will memorialize and celebrate the life of Joe Wilcox.  The gathering will be held at La Roca church in Plaza San Francisco (on the second floor above The Garden Restaurant).  Joe was an active member of our community, several hiking groups and the Boquete Rotary Club, where he was always one of the first to volunteer for community service. We miss his upbeat and generous spirit.

We invite all of Joe's friends to join us for this celebration of life.

'Best of Panama geisha coffee record  score

Lamastus family celebrate historic result

Panama's geisha coffee is renowned worldwide and fetches hundreds of dollars a pound in international auctions.

On Saturday, May 27  The Elida Geisha Green coffee lot, owned by Lamastus Family Estates, recorded an all-time record score in the annual Best of Panama coffee tasting event.

The historical score of 94.66 won the washing geisha category.

In the natural geisha segment, the Elida Green-Tip Lamastus Family Estates also won first place with a 93.35 rating.

For traditional washing, first place went to the Cañas Verdes lot of the Hacienda La Esmeralda with a score of 90.6.

Kotowa won in the traditional natural and pacamara categories.

Wilford Lamastus won the title of producer of the year.

[News Boquete] Thank you to Big Daddy's and the Micheal Cooper Band

On Saturday, May 19th, Big Daddy's again hosted a Pig Roast fundraiser for the Boquete Rotary Club's Scholarship fund.  It was an enjoyable evening with delicious food and great music.

These scholarships are awarded annually to deserving Boquete area students.  If you would like to contribute, please email me for more information.  Our goal is to provide 10 college scholarships each year to local students.

Our thanks to the community, Big Daddy's and Micheal Cooper's band for their generosity and support for this worthwhile cause.
